Abstract
The experimental work in the soil mechanics laboratories of the Department of Engineering at the University of Manchester was, until the mid nineteen seventies, almost exclusively related to static and quasi-static loading conditions. With the onset of work associated with environmental loadings on offshore and coastal structures traditional, manual experimental control and slow data recording techniques became inadequate. This paper indicates the benefits that small computers have brought to experimental work within the soil mechanics group in postgraduate and staff research. In this area the range and sophistication of experimental work which can now be contemplated have been expanded enormously.
