Summary
Building information modeling (BIM) has motivated research in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. This paper presents ongoing research, which discusses the incorporation of BIM in digital design proposing to analyze an alternative use of performative architecture for conceptual design.

The hypothesis is that if BIM is "a modelling technology and associated set of processes to produce, communicate, and analyze building models" [1] then BIM will be better taken advantage of as an integration mechanism for multi-performance-based generation architectural design. Our comparison is to integrate with a CAD descriptive design model or a generation-evaluation CAD design model during early design stage.

The first step of this paper developes an initial description and the analysis of the most common design model of subcategories of the CAD model and the performance model for an architectural design practice pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of BIM associated practice. Also, an explanation is given as to how the performance model can be a real new paradigm for architectural digital practice linked with most advanced BIM concepts.

Finally this paper will show the next steps of the research. It includes an action research that will analyze and evaluate the introduction in design education studio of digital design integrated with BIM in the conceptual design stage taking into account these three different design models as described in [2]. It has been chosen to study state school projects for the state of São Paulo, in Brazil, due to the existence of regulations suggesting very specific guidelines and rules, which can be used as a performance basis.

As a result, this paper tries to show a multi-performance-based generation design model as an integrated practice encouraging intelligent modeling and developing new architect skills, in the BIM era, compared to traditional digital design models. At the same time, this work will develop a form-making performance-based conceptual design for fundamental schools taking into consideration FDE regulations and rules.
