Abstract
This paper examines the progress which has been made in the field of the location and mapping of underground services. The advances which have been made are entirely due to the development of computers. Standards have been produced concerning the application of these new techniques. Although powerful computer systems have now largely superseded the hand-held machines which gave rise to Co-ordinated Pipelines, a combination of survey and design in the field still has an important role and continues to be developed.
