Abstract
The relative merits of nonlinear first yield and ultimate strength design philosophies are discussed in general terms for plate structures in compression. It is suggested that ultimate strength data is lacking for many plate structures of practical significance and that comprehensive nonlinear first yield design data may be derived more readily for these situations. To illustrate the point the nonlinear first yield analysis of an initially bowed circular plate in uniform edge compression is outlined and used to generate design data. The data is presented in the form of design charts covering the practical range of slenderness of both simply supported and clamped plates with various initial bow amplitudes. A simple design example is included to demonstrate the practical application of the design charts.
