Abstract
This paper explores the use of methods of structural optimization to mitigate earthquake effects in building design. Various "shear beam" models are constructed as continuous approximations of different types of discrete structures. A numerical example describing the effect of varying the shear stiffness on the tip displacement of a cantilever beam is included.
