Abstract
The paper is concerned with optimum design of reinforced concrete (R/C) beams. A practical optimum design formulation and solution algorithm is proposed, which is specifically structured for use on microcomputers. The specific features inherent to R/C structures are exploited to keep the design variables and behavioural and side constraints at a minimum. Linear programming (LP) is used as the optimization technique.

The formulation refers to a single span of a continuous beam, which has a singly reinforced rectangular cross-section. However, multi-span beams, one way slabs, and T-sections can also be easily accommodated. The use of the method is illustrated with an example. It is believed that, the method will be attractive to those who long to see the practical benefits of structural optimization reflected in readily usable form without making vital sacrifice in sophistication.
