Summary
Over recent years, the scale of construction projects has increased significantly in Taiwan; the project contents have become relatively complicated and the work division for project execution tends to be specialized. In order to achieve the goal of project management, construction companies have invested an enormous amount of efforts on development of new construction technology. Since construction projects consume a tremendous amount of manpower and the work interface is complicated, it is a difficult task in coordination and information exchange. If the professional knowledge can be integrated, managed and represented in electronic form, it will not only enhance corporate competitiveness, but also make preservation of professional knowledge as one of the greatest assets in the industry.
In this study, ER Studio is used to construct a database structure and InterBase is used as a database managing system. Moreover, Delphi and Asp.net are used as tools in system development, while the "Knowledge Base for Building Construction Technology" is constructed according to the knowledge map concept. Through case data input and test on system functions, as well as ensuring that each sub system functions normally, integrated test is carried out and no major mistake occurs. This shows that the database planning is capable of fulfilling set target and required functions. With the construction of a knowledge base for building construction technology, construction companies are able to establish a mechanism of relevant knowledge for construction technology. Such a mechanism applies a WindowsTM interface for direct display of information and records related to construction methods in the managing system, which also allows rapid search and other applications. The knowledge base can improve managerial benefit of relevant construction methods, which allows construction companies to save costs, reduce resources required for management on construction methods and improve overall productivity of the construction industry. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
