Abstract
This paper presents some experiences of, and observations by, the author, within BNFL and elsewhere of computer applications in the construction site environment. These experiences range from the assessment, design, development, implementation and operation of bespoke software for a variety of applications encompassing the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Instrumentation engineering disciplines.
The author has observed that substantial benefits can accrue from the thoughtful application of computer based systems. He has, however, also observed that the majority of problems arising from the use of computer applications are as a result, initially, of an inadequately defined business specification for the application; and, latterly, of laxity in the production or enforcement of detailed operational procedures for the system. (The system in this context includes all that is necessary, both manually and computer related, to ensure ALL requires information is processed.) This paper, therefore, can be considered in two sections. Firstly, a discussion on some computer applications in the construction site environment; and secondly, a discussion of a more general nature on system specification and operational requirements. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
