Abstract
Bolted baseplates are intensively used in piping industry to steel skeleton baseplate: more efficiently stiffened by
connect pipe supports to foundations. This is due to the the column cross-section.
relatively simple manufacturing and assembly of such
connections. However, this technological ease of use is in
radical contradiction with the difficulties arising from the
behaviour of baseplates under loading.
A common baseplate connection is indeed composed of several structural elements: the weld between support column and baseplate, the bolts and the concrete foundation. The transmission of forces and moments through the whole connection is thus ruled by several complex contact phenomena between deformable bodies. Practical design methods or research works dealing with baseplate connections are abundant in literature. Nevertheless, none of them leads to globally adequate analysis, especially when experimental validation is concerned. This paper aims at presenting a modest additional contribution to the understanding of typical baseplate connections for piping supports. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
