Abstract
Structural damage recently has become an important key issue
in civil engineering, if design for durability is intended.
Intensive theoretical studies in the last decades concentrate
mainly on continuum damage mechanics disregarding almost
completely the structural level, where damage effects on
carrying capacity and safety are most likely recognised.
The present paper starts with an engineering definition of structural damage, then investigates, in which external variables of a non-linear structural response damage can be detected. Finally it proposes a number of computational global damage measures and illustrates their properties by a numerical example. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
