Abstract
This paper presents a modular optimisation toolbox based on genetic algorithms, tuned for engineering design. The tool box designed to be interfaced with traditional engineering analysis packages, and evaluating the possible solution of the optimisation problem in parallel over a distributed network of heterogenous workstations. The optimiser was applied to a high-dimensional optimisation problem for gas turbine combustor preliminary design where the aims were, first, to achieve the same performance targets as traditional design, and in a second step to surpass the manual design.
