Abstract
The design process of constructional steelwork is essentially
a sequential process whereby many decisions at the
conceptual and member design process effect the
downstream activities of detailing, fabrication and erection.
Decision-makers at the early stages might not appreciate or
have in depth knowledge of the subtleties of the downstream
activities.
The objective of the work described here is to improve the quality of the design through the making of better informed decisions that are based on a wider range of features than is usually possible using traditional approaches. This is achieved through the embedding of KBES technology within integrated steel design software. This paper describes how a Knowledge Based Expert System object was developed and included in two structural design systems to facilitate a 'fully integrated' and informed approach to the design of steel structures. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
