Abstract
As part of the modernisation and upgrading of the Marine Terminal facilities of the Esso Fawley Refinery, the following modification works have been carried out:
  1. Installation of a loading arm on Berth 6 to replace the existing detachable hose.
  2. Installation of single loading arm, with a future provision of a total of three, on Berth 8 to replace the existing detachable hoses.
  3. Construction of additional storey to the existing Dock Masters Building to house new visual display units
The paper presents 3 separate case studies where finite element analyses have been used for assessing the strength of as built structures for the proposed modification works. These are described in this paper.

It is not a normal practice to use a sophisticated analysis such as finite element analysis for the design of civil/structural works in the petro-chemical industry. A traditional hand calculation method deemed to be sufficient for the design. By using the finite element analysis, major modifications to the structures were averted, which lead to considerable saving in construction cost and time.
