Abstract
In this paper traditional design of rigid steel plane frame
according to two codes of practice, the British Standard (BS
5950) : part 1 (1990) Structural Use of Steelwork in Building, and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) (1986) is carried
out. The frame is subjected to wind loading according to
ANSl (1994) as per AlSC specifications and CP3 (1972) as
per British Standard. In addition, vertical gravity dead and
imposed loads are considered. A 15-storey, 3-bay frame was
designed according to the AISC LRFD and BS 5950 using
AISC standard sections and British Standard sections. The
comparison of both designs revealed that the former code
results in a lighter frame.
