Abstract
A novel numerical technique for the damage identification of composite structures is presented. The laminated structure is modelled by finite elements. When the structure undergoes some kind of damage, its stiffness is reduced, clanging the dynamic response. By considering the mode shapes orthogonality conditions sensitivities of the undamaged and damaged structure, an algorithm is formulated, which calculates a damage parameter in each finite element. The damage parameter is directly related to the stiffness reduction of the damaged finite element. The proposed numerical model allows the identification of multiple damage and does not need to know a prior; the probable areas of damage. The algorithm is applied to a laminated rectangular plate free in space and its efficiency is demonstrated through a damage simulation.
