Abstract
An error estimator for thick plate elements has been proposed based on the residuals in the partial differential equations representing thick plate behaviour. This estimator has been compared against estimators based on mesh refinement and on stress discontinuities at element boundaries. It was found that estimates formed from mesh refinement are difficult to establish consistently but that there was significant correlation between results obtained from residuals and those obtained from stress jumps based on projection from Gauss points.
