Abstract
This paper probably looks at engineering innovation from a different perspective to the majority presented at this conference. Here, we examine not the academic or engineering advances themselves, but rather how the engineering industry (and specifically consultancy companies) can best exploit such advances to competitive advantage. The paper first looks at the changing pressures on engineering consultancies, and the responses required for commercial survival and then looks at how technically advanced ideas have to be exploited to competitive advantage to justify the large investment in such work.
