Abstract
The paper describes how the innovative idea of an Engineering Design Centre (EDC) has been used to
successfully integrate academia. industry and government to
build up a successful design research base. This paper will
concentrate on the civil and structural engineering aspects
and show how the requirements were met at the Newcastle
EDC, the biggest and most successful of the EDCs.
