Abstract
The application of advanced electronic and optical techniques to highway signaling systems has led to the call for new cantilever or portal gantries, or the adaption of existing portal gantry structures to support the new equipment over motorways and other high capacity highways. This has resulted in a study of the scope of structures to support signs and signals over the highway, together with the review and revision of the design criteria for such structures.

The paper discusses the matters to be taken into account in the design of gantry structures to support large directional and variable message signs and motorway signals to provide a variety of information to highway drivers. Consideration is given to establishing the technical requirements, layout and constraints, materials, appearance, structural form, ease of construction and maintenance. design criteria adopted in United Kingdom, procurement procedures. and standardisation of design.
