Abstract
Historical perspectives have been carried out on many topics but very few, if any, have covered the innovations used in the development of the beam over the last few hundred years. This paper charts some of the major innovations which have taken place over the last few hundred years and investigates some of the reasons behind the developments. The paper also reviews some aspects of historical texts and construction methods, discussing innovation and development.

The paper begins with a look at beam development in the 1700's and continues through to present day.
