Abstract
This paper presents research out on the semi-continuum idealisation of simply supports beam and slab bridge decks in order to calculate distribution coefficients for the speedy determination of stress resultants and displacements due to traffic loads on bridges as specified in ECI. The paper builds on work already carried out by the author which was the subject of a paper at the last Computational Structures conference held in Greece in 1995. The semicontinuum method is explained in principle and then applied to a simple bridge deck consisting of a reinforced concrete slab on prestressed Y-beams.

The method is shown to be simple and reliable and presents bridge engineers with a simple, accurate and reliable means of analysis.
