Abstract
Following a pure Lagrangian approach, a fully nonlinear, geometrically exact, finite strain rod model is derived in terms of the rotation parameters from Euler-Rodrigues formula. The parametrization is very useful for numerical procedures employing Galerkin projection and yields a symmetric Fréchet derivative of the weak form of the equilibrium equations. It is shown that initially curved rods can be handled in a straightforward manner, with minor changes in the constitutive equation.
