Abstract
In this paper an adaptive finite element procedure for
the solution of elastic-plastic problems in structural mechanics
is presented. The method is based on a h-adaptive
hierarchical mesh refinement strategy. Special attention is
given to the essential ingredients of the adaptive process,
the calculation of suitable error indicators, the mesh refinement
strategy, and the mapping of history-dependent state
variables between different meshes. These are imbedded in
a nonlinear incremental finite element procedure. Some
numerical examples demonstrate the applicability of the approach
to general elastic-plastic problems including associated
as well as non-associated plasticity.
