Abstract
This paper describes some possibilities of using artificial intelligence (AI) in structural steel design process, especially in steel joint design. It is a well known fact that proper and cost-effective connection design is a task requiring firstly comprehensive knowledge of statics, fabrication and erection techniques and secondly a plenty of time. In many cases all of these resources are not present at the same time in same place (in one person). A knowledge-based expert system (KBES) is proposed 1) to support steel joint design in selection of suitable connection types and setting values for joint parameters considering structural as well as fabrication, erection and other aspects, 2) to assist the creation of reasonable analyzing models with respect to accuracy and resources available.
