Abstract
This paper presents ICM, the Interdisciplinary Communication Medium for synchronous and asynchronous collaborative design. ICM is the result of ongoing research in the development of a computer environment that addresses some of the needs in multidisciplinary team work. This paper argues that collaborative teamwork is a process of reaching a shared understanding of the design and construction domains, the requirements, the building to be built, and the commitments it entails. The process involves communication, negotiation, and team learning. Collaborative design requires diverse computer support for (1) different modes of interaction in time, i.e., synchronous vs asynchronous, and space, i.e., collocated vs distributed, and (2) various needs of content sharing and exchange, i.e., independent vs integrated graphic and symbolic shared models and information.
