Abstract
One of the most pressing world-wide issues is managing the
increasing traffic congestion occurring in populated areas.
This problem is particularly acute in areas where suburbs
and rural communities are being subsumed by neighboring
cities.
This paper presents a working model to optimize intersection design and operation across the four impact measures (motorist time delay, safety, air pollution, and cost). The hybrid modeling system operates on PC microcomputers under MS Windows 3.1, and consists of four components: a knowledge-base to form boundaries on the search space of valid alternative designs; a simulation model to measure the complex vehicle interactions; a graphical display system; and a parametric model which suggests design parameter changes. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
