Abstract
The paper presents experimental results for three thin-wailed circular conical shells which were tested to destruction, under uniform external pressure. All three vessels failed by inelastic shell instability.

Using the results from these tests, together with other results, two design chairs were provided which can be used for designing thin-walled conical shells under uniform external pressure.

One of the vessels also failed by plastic axisymmetric yield collapse. This vessel was successfully analysed with the aid of an incremental non-linear finite element solution, which allowed for both geometrical and material non-linearity.
