Abstract
A design method for steel frames having semi-rigid connections between beams and columns, with or without infill, panels is proposed. The method has been checked against test results and finite element analysis which has been used to carry out a parametric survey to investigate the bracing area used by BS5950 to evaluate the lateral stiffness at each storey level. The effectiveness and efficiency of the approach is demonstrated by application to a number of examples. In the interest of simplicity and speed in routine design, such an approximate method is naturally preferred by designers.
