Abstract
The applicability of conventional geotechnical earthquake engineering procedures to the evaluation of seismic response of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (MSWL) is examined. Results of seismic response analyses (for different levels of base motion) performed by the author and other investigators are examined to evaluate the impact of stiffness and height of the refuse fill on the overall response. A strong influence by moderate increase in dynamic strength (stiffness) properties on the response has been noted. Based on these analyses, the influence of shear wave velocity is discussed. The importance of low and high frequency contents of the base motions is also addressed. This paper also develops a preliminary approach to assess the strains likely to develop in the clay liner system as a result of earthquake induced deformations along the interface of the geomembrane/clay liner.
