Abstract
This paper describes two phases in the development of a
Knowledge Based System for the design and detailing of
reinforced concrete structures. The first phase included the
development of the system architecture using the development
tool, Goldworks III. Due to the tragic loss of N Jain in early
1992 this phase was left in a near completed state but without
detailed documentation. The aim of the second phase was to
revive the interrupted development and to extend the scope of
the KBS. This maintenance and documentation phase
provided a test of the benefits of using a KBS development
tool. This paper details a number of practical problems
associated with the maintenance of knowledge based systems
and methods of overcoming these. The software maintenance
tools available in Goldworks III are demonstrated and their
usefulness is discussed.
