Abstract
The Timoshenko beam is a structural system which easily allow the dynamic analysis of structural elements, when shear deformation and rotatory inertia become meaningful. Movable arms, towers and antennae are the most typical examples, and all these cases can be reduced to a Timoshenko beam with variable cross section. Usually, approximate free vibration frequencies can be obtained by standard finite element methods, whereas in this note lagrangian approach is adopted, which was already used in order to solve similar problems. The proposed analysis seems to be rather interesting, at least if compared with more usual FE methods, since a lower-upper bound can be obtained. The paper ends with some numerical examples and comparison with classical results.
