Abstract
Computing nonlinear load-displacement curves in statics we have to solve sets of nonlinear equations consisting of the equilibrium equations augmented by one constraint to accomplish postbuckling analysis. Applying a predictor-corrector scheme to solve these systems of nonlinear equations the resulting sets of linear Newton equations consequently contain one additional row and one additional column compared to the tangent stiffness matrix. There are two algorithmic strategies to solve these extended systems. Also we have to decide whether to use a direct or an iterative equation solver. The possible combinations of algorithmic strategies and solvers deliver four approaches to path following in nonlinear statics which are discussed in this paper.
