Abstract
An alternative approach for the formulation of hybrid stress elements is presented. A modified Hellinger-Reissner principle is used to relax the patch test under distorted meshes. Interpolation on isoparametric coordinates is used in both displacement and stress. The stress distribution is obtained by tensor transformation on some stress terms. Based on this approach, a 4-node planar element and a 8-node solid element are developed. Numerical testing enhances the good performance of these hybrid stress elements in the estimation of both stresses and displacements in elastostatic problems.
