Abstract
Shell U.K. Exploration and Production, operator in the U.K. sector of the North Sea for Shell and Esso, are currently carrying out a redevelopment of their Brent Field. This requires are appraisal of the strength of the topside module support structures which are of stiffened plate girder construction. Detailed finite element models of these structures, analysed using SESAM, already exist . Given the complexity of these structures, hand calculations to assess their strength were considered impractical. This paper describes software specially written to assist in this work. It describes how the software creates a structural model consisting of panels and stiffeners from the finite element model which can then be assessed by the code checking part of the software. Finally a detailed description is provided of how the software has been used to carry out the reappraisal of the Brent Bravo deck.
