Abstract
To understand more about the stress distribution due to dead weight in RCC dams, the 3-dimensional finite element analysis and the model experiment for a RCC dam have been performed, yielding new knowledge in this field. This paper describes mainly the computational aspect of this work.

The Accumulated Approach and the Conventional Approach are used in the analysis. The difference between these two approaches resides in whether the ageing effect of concrete and the construction procedure for RCC dams are taken into account. The results obtained through these two approaches are compared and discussed in detail. It is pointed out that the stress distribution due to dead weight in RCC dams is related closely to the construction procedure. The results obtained prove to be realistic and are useful for the design and construction of RCC dams.
