Keywords: component mode synthesis, substructuring, coupled primary-secondary systems.

Summary
The major issues related to the analysis of large structural systems by substructuring are investigated in the present paper. The effectiveness shown by the component mode synthesis method with reference to other approaches is discussed. Such method is more appropriate when the whole structure is designed in such a way that major parts with different structural properties and characteristics are present, like in the case of structural systems composed by a primary and a secondary substructures. Moreover three different component mode synthesis method in the case of structural systems composed by two substructures are described.
