Abstract
This paper reports an initial stage of a research project in the development of an integrated production management expert system for the precast concrete industry in the UK. The objective of this article is to introduce and discuss the framework of the proposed system. Six major precast companies have visited and their management production system was analysed. Key management decisions were identified and production management expertise practices were elicited for the purpose of developing the system.

The paper concluded that responding to a customer enquiry with its associated decisions are the key issues for the integrated production management expert system in the make-to-order sector of the precast industry.
