Abstract
Researchers in Cardiff are currently working with several bridge engineering organisations to develop flexible rules and guidelines for the aesthetic design of bridges. Public opinion is also being surveyed to qualify all rules derived from expert opinion and to establish a wider view of bridge appearance. It is envisaged that the work will eventually lead to the development of a Knowledge Based System which will provide advice on bridge aesthetics. The aims of the research and the work undertaken to date are described.
