Abstract
Applications of AI are widening our understanding with regard to modelling techniques and resultant applications. This also covers building construction research where, experts systems, neural networks and robotics have been sources of steadily increasing research and development efforts. However, apart from the existing technical documentation, very little has been written about the underlying reasons for applications of AI being adopted or ignored by potential users. The objective of this paper is to present a perspective for the development of AI applications and, particularly, neural networks for construction. Also the efforts of the Technical Research Centre of Finland - W to bring applications of neural networks in the briefing and initial design stages of new building construction projects are briefly presented. Of VTT's efforts, a neural network application named E-Net for estimating energy consumption of buildings is described in greater detail.
