Abstract
This paper describes a finite element program, SHELAX, and an associated interactive program for data preparation, CTINPT. Both programs run on mainframe, mini and micro computers. SHELAX was written in the author's firm and for several years has been regularly used to aid the design of circular reinforced concrete tanks for water treatment and storage.

SHELAX uses an axisymmetric curved thin-shell element with isoparametric formulation and cubic shape function. Elements may be connected to a frictionless, elastic foundation which supports the structure with a force per unit area proportional to normal displacement. The structure is modelled as a series of curved or straight shells which are interconnected at points of discontinuous curvature.

Emphasis is placed on the simplicity of data preparation, the interactive nature of data input and the organization of results into a form immediately usable by the engineer for the design of reinforcement. The term 'finite element analysis' is usually associated with large, complex structures with consequently lengthy data preparation. SHELAX is simple and quick to use; the analysis of straightforward structures may be completed rapidly.
