Summary
In this paper, the status in quo of rail technology for heavy haul railways in China is introduced. The focus is on the existing problems of the rails on China's Datong-Qinhuangdao heavy haul railway. Here we consider extending the service life of the future rail service and provide advice on the material, rail type, profile, maintenance and repair. The high purity, high strength and toughness as well as larger profiles are still under development; the rail head profile is optimized to improve the wheel-rail geometric matching condition and the contact stress. The repair and maintenance of the rail is based on the service condition and is scientific, reasonable and economical.
