Summary
This paper introduces a new type of abutment reinforced with geosynthetics for railroads to reduce construction costs of the abutment and transition zone. The objective of this research is to develop a more economical and an abutment and transition zone that provides better performance. To achieve this goal, firstly we used two-dimensional numerical analysis to evaluate the performance when subject to train loadings. From the numerical analysis, we found that the responses of the settlement of the transition zone and the horizontal displacement of the abutment) could be decreased by about twenty percent when the abutment is reinforced with geosynthetics compared with abutments without geosynthetics.
