Summary
This paper shows synthetic railway sleeper technology using glass fibers and polyurethane. Fiber-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU) technology was developed in Japan during 1978. First field tests were made in 1980 and since 1985 it has been a standard product of Japanese railways. Significant research and testing have been done on FFU technology. This includes in 2013 from Technical University of Munich for sleepers of a height of only 120mm and for a traffic axel load of 22.5t and a speed of up to 200km/h. Results of this test are given in this paper. Since the positive approval for the use of this sleeper from the BAV (Bundesamt für Verkehr) in Switzerland and the EBA (Eisenbahnbundesamt) in Germany many projects were done with low height sleepers. In addition slim sleeper longitudinal baulks with dimensions from approximately w/h/l=40/40/750cm have been installed for the first time with this technology on a project in the United Kingdom. Information about this project you will find at the last part of this paper.
