Summary
This paper describes the development of a numerical method to analyse the behavior of an encased granular column embedded in soft clay. The proposed method employs the elastic-plastic constitutive law with a non-associated flow rule for the filled material and the strain hardening-softening relationship for the encasement. A modified Cam-clay model is employed to characterize mechanical behaviour of the soft clay. Finally, the proposed model analyses encased sand columns embedded in clay, which involves three materials, namely clay, sand and geotextile. All the numerically analyzed results are proven to be satisfactory when compared with the model test results.
