Summary
Accidents caused by explosion of various gases represent a high danger mainly in branches of engineering such as gas manufacture, petro-chemistry, extraction of mineral raw materials and others. However, explosion hazards may exist in all engineering buildings and structures where gas is used. This paper deals with modelling of accidents connected with leaks and following the explosion of flammable gas. The paper describes the explosion of an apartment house with tragic consequences. Within this paper, computational methods for the determination of the amount and time of the gas leak are presented. Numerical modelling is used for determination of the gas spread in the building and for a course of events following deflagration. Numerical models are verified using simplified experiments. Numerical modelling could be a good instrument for prevention and investigation of accidents.
