Abstract
ATOP is an interactive computer program for generating and managing schedules of a building construction project. It is the result of an analysis and synthesis of schedule preparation in a typical building construction project. ATOP is highly domain-dependent and therefore it is assumed that ATOP meets the needs of construction practitioners better than domain-independent project management software packages.

ATOP comprises features from knowledge-based systems: automatic generation of an initial schedule and an object-oriented database for storing relevant data. ATOP can also be used to study alternative schedules with the aid of special procedures which generate and update activity dependencies. Hierarchical, object-oriented data structures are used to store the state of a schedule under preparation. The data structures contain both qualitative and quantitative data.
