Abstract
This paper describes the utilization of an elasto-plastic finite element program package for graphical demonstration of the post-elastic behavior of steel members. The package, which has been developed by the authors for a VAX 11/780 computer system, consists of four programs, namely, "PRE", "MESH", "PLASTO" and "ZONE". The first two programs are pre-processors for the elasto-plastic finite element program "PLASTO" and the last program is a post-processor which presents the results graphically. The package allows the user to detect critical locations where yielding will first occur in a steel member, to trace the yielding pattern as the applied load is gradually increased and to predict the failure mode. It may also be used to study behavioral changes as tile loading conditions, geometry and material properties of the member are altered.
