Abstract
It is current practice for heavy structural steelwork t o be designed by specialists in design work who concentrate on achieving structural adequacy at a minimum weight. Fabricating companies who are responsible for producing these sections often have to redesign the section t o suit economical methods of working. This paper describes an operational knowledge based decision support system which has been produced at the University of Sheffield, which integrates these two design optimization criteria.
