Abstract
Intelligent knowledge based systems (IKBS) will play an increasing part in our computer programs in the future. The knowledge bases will in many cases contain knowledge previously only available to the specialist domain expert. Such systems will have considerable impact on the construction industry particularly on the relationship between the professionals within the industry.

This paper briefly describes how intelligent knowledge based systems or expert systems differ from other techniques and looks at some of the research and development work now being undertaken that could affect the construction industry.

It is suggested that future expert systems will be integrated to form parts of suites of computer programs rather than huge stand alone 'experts', and that development should be carried out as joint ventures between industry and the Universities and Polytechnics.
