Abstract
The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland, with the Queen's University of Belfast has developed a system incorporating a microcomputer and ultrasonic sensors for use in the rapid, non-contact measurement of rutting in roads. Fast response transducers provide real time measurement of the distance to ground with a resolution of 0.4% of the working range. The prototype system has five transducers spaced along a beam at right angles to the direction of motion. The microcomputer provides control of the system operation, data acquisition and result generation and display. It is also programmed to present an analysis of the results in a form suitable for use by maintenance engineers. The complete system can be accommodated and operated in a small vehicle travelling at speeds up to 50 km/hr.
